Police investigating chemical incident on campus; residents return
January 17, 2013
Campus police are conducting a criminal investigation into a small chemical explosion that took place in an apartment in the Russell Park housing complex during the early morning hours of Thursday, Jan. 17. The resident of the apartment, a researcher at UC Davis, was injured during the explosion and went to an area hospital.
Police spent the day searching the apartment and removing potentially hazardous chemicals. As a safety precaution, nearby apartments were evacuated. Many residents had returned to their apartments Thursday afternoon. The remainder received word early Friday that they could return.
Thursday evening, police took some of the chemicals to an open area west of campus to render them harmless. Nearby residents were advised that they might hear a series of pops during the exercise.
Student Affairs staff provided assistance to students who had to leave their apartments.
Additional information about the ongoing investigation will be posted here and available on our emergency status line at (530) 752-4000 as it becomes available.
